  • You Karaoke Good

sheena is a parasite - video still

Last night was odd. I had Amy Winehouse, Victoria Beckham, Joshua Third, Avril Lavigne and Pink all in my kitchen. Of course, this is code for a handful of my friends were dressed up like these musical wonders. I think the best was the Joshua Third impersanation - scary as hell.
We did karaoke, which my friends all took very seriously, which I found quite bizarre. I danced around dressed as Patrick Wolf (think Accident And Emergency), playing the prat as usual. It's always fun to do, but then I realised - I am the only person in my "group of friends" willing to forget to be cool and act like a complete prat to have a good time. I was kind of dumbfounded by this, and the fact that my friends are all very competitive. You can't have a laugh in teams, you really can't.

  • This Page Does Not Exist

How bizarre. My computer likes to take me to other worlds, fantasy lands and places of myth. Like just now - I clicked on an interview with The White Stripes, and I was told that the page that I was on didn't exist. Since I was on it this quite obviously means I have electronic magical powers. And you tell me I'm failing maths...?

  • Listen Up, Mercury Judges...

    Arctic Monkeys

No, I'm still not over this.
Ok, so they picked up on a few decent albums this year, and I suppose you have to congratulate them when they actually make some good choices. Because they are usually very few and far between, especially in picking the winners. Pretend everything's just gone into sepia tone and your vision has become all scratchy, because I'm taking you back in time to look at the right balls up the judges have made over the last few years.

    1994
Blur's Parklife album was overlooked to give the prize to M People. M People!

    1997
Radiohead's fascinating OK Computer album was overlooked to give the prize to Roni Size (Reprazent). And possibly worse than that, The Spice Girls were nominated for the win. Since when were the Spice Girls revolutionary music?

    1998
Another cock up just a year later. Surely The Verve's Urband Hymns should have won that one?

1999 and 2000's nominees were as boring as hell. Manic Street Preachers? Stereophonics? Coldplay? No wonder Badly Drawn Boy won in 2000.

    2002
Ms Dynamite won over David Bowie. Nuff said.

    2003
The Darkness were nominated and Radiohead lost. How ridiculous.

    2005
A pretty good year for nominations, but how did The Magic Numbers get themselves on the list?!

    2006
Thom Yorke was nominated and didn't win?! And Arctic Monkeys did?! What the hell? Franz Ferdinand's second album should also have been in the running, since it was released Octovber of the previous year.

    2007
Well I've already had my rant about this years Mercury Music Prize nominees. If I had my way some of the nominees would be:

Voices Of Animals And Men - The Young Knives
Myths Of The Near Future - Klaxons
The Magic Position - Patrick Wolf
    Strange House - The Horrors
Yours Truly, Angry Mob - Kaiser Chiefs
    We Can Create - Maps
We Are The Night - The Chemical Brothers
Fantastic Playroom - New Young Pony Club

But of course I have not listened to every British album that was released this year, like the judges had to. But if I did I would at least pulled these four out of the hat that were not included in the nominations.

I am feeling quite angry now after this little rant, but I think it's all out of my system. Now, history homework.

  • There's Something About The Hives

    The Hives

I have just listened to Timbaland. God knows why. It was friggin awful. It was probably because The Hives featured in this particular song, and for some reason I got the idea that even if they were in a rap record they could make it good. It just shows you how wrong one person can be. I'll never get that time back.

The Hives original stuff however, is a different story. I've always loved The Hives - the first song of theirs I heard was Here We Go Again off the Barely Legal album, and I've been hooked ever since.
Their new song, Tick Tick Boom, is amazing too. It's classic Hives - fantastic as it is addictive. They also have new suits too, which look superb - the band were on Jonathan Ross on friday and he made a comment about sixth form hogwarts students. Well it's a step up from dressing like the colonel from KFC.

New album coming...soon, I can't actually recall when. It's called The Black And White album anyway, which I quite like. And tour! How exciting.

  • Random Ramblings About Nothing In Particular

I do believe I might be sick. My throat feels like someone has poured gravel down it and I may well vomit. How attractive.
I don't know what I have lesson-wise tomorrow. It probably won't be interesting, I very rarely learn anything worth knowing at school, apart from that my english teacher is actually heavily pregnant, and not just fat like we all thought she was. I know I don't have graphic art, which is always good news because my graphic art class is full of narrow-minded prats that aren't worth anyone's last rolo.
I have been listening to a lot of electronic music lately, and it's becoming one of my favourite genres. I quite like MIT, Late Of The Pier, The High Priestess and The Chemical Brothers from this particular genre, as well as Bjork and Patrick Wolf's more electronic side. Those two forementioned artists are amazing, their voices can do anything and their music has no set style. Their album's really are albums, and not just the greatest hits of the songs they've wrote.
I saw the most ridiculous thing on tv today. It was the fabulous life of hollywood young stars, and Paris Hilton was on it with this motorbike she had made for her. It was encrusted with millions of jewels, it had a mirror where the petrol went in and when the bike turned a corner it said "that's hot".
I have been writing about mods a lot in english recently, as we got to write this rambling piece of work, which was quite fun to do. And mods tend to crop up a lot in it. Mods fascinate me for many reasons but I think I've rambled on enought now and I am going to get a shower. Goodnight xx

  • Terra Firma! Terra Firma!

    The Young Knives

As I have said before, I quite like The Young Knives. A lot of their music seems like nonsense (to me, anyway), and a lot of it I don't get - cast your minds back to The Decision - great song, haven't got a bloody clue what it's about. I think if I did the world would probably be a better place. I will have to look it up on songmeanings later.
Anyway, they have a new song coming out next month, which is called Terra Firma, and again, I haven't got a clue what it's about. Fake rabbit real snake? What the hell does that mean?! Who knows! Who cares! It's a great song that will be forever stuck in my head.
So, The Young Knives - Mercury Music Prize nomminees this year, Mercury Music Prize winners the next? If this song is anything to go by they should just be given the award now.

  • Late Of The Pier Are THAT Good

    Late Of The Pier

I first heard about Late Of The Pier somewhere in Artrocker, possibly in a live review, and then an interview with the band about how they were playing the underage festival. I don't know why I didn't check them out - they were on the page opposite Hatcham Social so maybe that distracted me - and when I heard the were supporting Hadouken! (one of many bands awkward enough to put punctuation in their names, grrr) I wasn't too eager to do the old hype-machine search. Come on, Hadouken!? (see how messy that looks? damn bands.) They're about as scenester as they come.
But I decided to give them a go since they had made a very cool comment about scarecrows in their interview with forementioned magazine (I'm easily impressed), and well the verdict...

    Oh. My. God.

It was completely the opposite of what I was expecting and it caught me completely off guard, which is always a good thing. It's just unbelieveable, and I'm shocked and amazed they're not on the cover of every music magazine in the world, and people aren't namedropping them to look cool. They are that good.
Their myspace is a rather original www.myspace.com/lateofthepier , which I suggest everyone should check out. I am quite fond of their song Space In The Woods at the moment, especially the techno-rap near the end.

  • Patrick Wolf Saves The Day

    Patrick Wolf

Patrick Wolf is touring the UK in November, it's a short little tour he's doing without the usual backing band and is rumoured to be his last. Personally I think that's a load of crap and it mentions something about him touring album numero quatro on his record label's site, but what I know about it is nothing, basically. It would be a dire shame though and I would probably cry.
But all tears aside there is defo going to be this short UK tour towards the end of the year (unless he cancels it - see my white stripes moany post) which is all good news. So yay.

  • Our Guitar Tech Has A Wobbly Tooth! Cancel The Tour!

    The White Stripes

I have been looking forward to seeing The White Stripes in October since I booked tickets on the 13th of some month that wasn't that long ago and I think it was June. I love The White Stripes - they have to be one of my favourite bands ever, and they simply can do no wrong. This in mind I had read on their official site that they had cancelled the US leg of their remaining tours due to Meg being ill. Acute anxiety or summat.
The next day I read that they had cancelled the remaining tours til the end of the year and was majorly peeved. There is no real point to this post, just to show my sheer flippedoutness at the whole shebang.

  • Slow on the uptake...Mercury Music Prize!

    klaxons - rather good

Ok ok ok, I know the Mercury Music Prize winners were announced __________ weeks ago but I've only just got this blog and I feel like I should be able to rant about it regardless. So here it is; why the hell was Bat For Lashes nominated for that thing?! I also think it's bizarre how she was the favourite to win it, and even more bizarre that Arctic Monkeys or Amy Winehouse didn't. Not that they deserved to - I was quite happy to see Klaxons take the win, and The Young Knives are also pretty fantastic. I was certain that Amy Winehouse was going to win, with her being a "tortured star" and all. I thought they'd give it to her before she dies, and gone "she was so talented - look, she won the mercury music prize!" If not her Arctic Monkeys - I just don't get the attraction, but because they are so popular (reasons unknown at this time) they were probably just automatically put on the list, and that goes for Winehouse aswell. I was actually pretty amazed that she turned up to the ceremony at all, but I did find it funny that she and her Doherty-look-alike companion took off as soon as the winner was announced. She did more than Arctic Monkeys though, who recorded some dodgy thankyou speech, and then forced us to watch some song of theirs from glastonbury.
I really enjoyed Jamie T's performance on the night, as well as Maps (another solo artist nominated who gave themselves a new name), who's songs I have only heard a few times but will defo be listening to more of his stuff. The Young Knives were also very impressive as usual, and New Young Pony Club weren't half bad either. I quite like NYPC (as they are called by all cool people) and Tahita's haircut continues to have me in awe.
What was the deal with Simon Taylor in Klaxons live performance?! That was shambolic to say the least. No haircut will make up for that, no matter how fantastic it is.
Anyway I have ran out of things to say and I'm feeling quite hollow now after being so angry so I am just going to stop. Goodnight xx

  • My Dog Ate My First Blog Entry

First blogs are always as boring as hell; tedious and unnecessary introductions to who is writing this blog, what it's all about, amusing anecdotes about their pet brick or whatever crap people write in their first entry. It's just not interesting. I am well aware of this, and have come up with the ultimate solution - just don't have them. So, here's pretending everyone has read my first blog entry, understand everything about the blog and all laughed at my joke about iPod nanos. Thank goodness for that. Ok, onto the much easier and slightly less informative second blog entry. Which will come whenever I can think of anything slightly relevant to write, which will probably be a rant of any kind at all. Probably soon. I would also like a picture of a dog on this post but it's not going to happen because dogs are odd.
